When you laugh, it’s impossible not to feel good. Laughing is a form of exercise for your lungs while reducing stress hormones in your brain. Some say that It’s impossible not to feel better when you are laughing! So go out with friends, watch some funny TV shows or rent a comedy movie (we’ll discuss this more below).
2. Laugh at Yourself
Laughing at yourself may help you see your problems in a new light. Laughing is an important part of maintaining happiness and positivity. This is often easier said than done—often, our mistakes or shortcomings are accompanied by shame or embarrassment—but learning how to laugh at yourself (instead of beating yourself up) can help you develop more confidence when things don’t go exactly as planned. Remember: sometimes it really is funny when you fall down!
3. Enjoy Some Comedy Movies
While it’s not a new idea, it bears repeating: Research shows that comedy movies can make you happier. In one study, scientists asked participants to watch a funny movie of their choice, then measured how they felt both before and after. Those who chose funny flicks experienced immediate mood boosts, while those who chose dramas didn’t feel any better—they just thought they did. Do you need a pick-me-up? Do what you know is right: Kick back with some laughs.
4. Smile Often
A smile is one of our most powerful tools for staying positive. Every time you smile, whether at yourself in a mirror or at someone else, your brain registers it as something good, which actually makes you feel better than before! Next time you’re feeling down or overwhelmed, try smiling—it works! It sounds simple because it is simple. But sometimes we need reminding of things that are so important. Now get out there and spread some happiness!
5. Listen to Uplifting Music
Research suggests that listening to certain kinds of music can reduce anxiety, depression, and even physical pain. Music therapy has been used in hospitals for decades, and it’s not hard to see why; studies show that when patients listen to their favorite songs during an operation or serious procedure, they report less anxiety than those who aren’t able to listen. Pick up a CD of uplifting tunes you love and play it when things get stressful.
6. Take Breaks from Your Phone
Taking breaks from your phone can help you remain present with those around you, which is a great way to remain happy in stressful times. In addition, giving yourself phone-free time can also help you feel more relaxed. Instead of constantly checking your device, try taking a walk or getting involved in an activity that doesn’t involve technology—this will leave you feeling recharged.

Exercise makes us feel good about ourselves by increasing our body’s production of endorphins, a chemical that causes a sense of euphoria. Take at least ten minutes out of your day to exercise. Get your heart rate up. Even if your schedule is full, exercise can help you start your day with a positive attitude!
