Hygge: the Danish Secret to Happiness

Hygge, which means well-being in Danish, is quickly taking over the hearts and minds of entrepreneurs and business owners across the globe who want to boost their productivity and happiness at work. According to Danes, it’s all about creating an atmosphere of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment that helps us perform at our best and be the most productive we can be.

What is Hygge?

Hygge (pronounced HOO-ga), a term that actually has no direct translation in English, is about having a sense of feeling secure and content, even if you’re in an unfamiliar place. It’s being comfortable with your surroundings—whether at home or traveling abroad—because you have everything you need with you. While hygge seems particularly linked to Denmark and Norway, similar practices exist in other Scandinavian countries and Germany, too.

Creating a Cozy Home

The first step is to find a comfortable place where you can rest and relax. In many homes, there’s a family room or den dedicated specifically for relaxation. If your home doesn’t have one of these rooms already, consider adding cozy seating. This will help to create an inviting space for relaxing and unwinding. Bonus points if you can find furniture with pockets for storing favorite books and magazines.

Creating Wellness In Your Life

Wellness is a word that is being thrown around a lot today, but what does it really mean? Hygge has been found to have positive effects on wellness by reducing stress and anxiety. A key component of hygge is mindfulness, which allows you to take stock of your emotions and appreciate how you feel in that moment. This mindfulness will help create contentment in your life. What can you do today in order to better incorporate hygge into your life?

Creating Friendships

The secret to living a happy life is creating strong relationships. To create stronger, more meaningful relationships, you must create an atmosphere of happiness. Our friends often make us feel better when we’re feeling down, but research shows it’s not just that they cheer us up. Studies show that when our friends are around, we actually become happier than when we’re by ourselves or hanging out with strangers. To promote happy feelings in your home and at work, practice hygge by lighting candles, enjoying warm drinks with friends, and celebrating special occasions together.
